Abode of Clouds

About Meghalaya Touring

Meghalaya, known as the “Abode of Clouds,” is a beautiful northeastern state of India, famous for its lush landscapes, waterfalls, caves, and unique culture. The capital, Shillong, is often called the “Scotland of the East” and is known for its scenic beauty, with attractions like Umiam Lake, Elephant Falls, Shillong Peak, and Ward’s Lake. Cherrapunji, or Sohra, is one of the wettest places on Earth, boasting natural wonders like Nohkalikai Falls, Mawsmai Caves, and the famous Living Root Bridges, which are natural tree-root bridges created by local tribes. Mawlynnong Village, hailed as Asia’s cleanest village, offers a unique experience with its eco-friendly atmosphere and beautiful Sky Viewpoint offering panoramic views. Dawki is famous for its crystal-clear Umngot River, ideal for boating and scenic views. Nartiang features ancient monoliths and cultural sites. The state is also home to unique wildlife, with nearby Kaziranga National Park offering a chance to see the one-horned rhinoceros.

Best visited from October to April when the weather is cool and pleasant, Meghalaya is an adventurer’s paradise, offering trekking, caving, and exploration of the indigenous Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo cultures. The local cuisine includes dishes like Jadoh (rice and meat), Dohneiiong (pork with black sesame), and Pukhlein (a sweet rice dessert). The region can be accessed by air, through Shillong’s Umroi Airport or Guwahati Airport (about 3-4 hours by road), or by train from Guwahati. Meghalaya’s blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and adventure makes it a must-visit destination for nature lovers and cultural enthusiasts alike.
